Dental Crowns

A dental crown or “cap” is used to restore a tooth when it is severely broken down and it covers the whole substance of the tooth. Sometimes they are placed after a tooth is root treated to help give the tooth more strength as these teeth can become very brittle.

There are several types of crown

  • A gold crown – strong and an excellent material but not everybody’s idea of great aesthetics.
  • Porcelain fused to precious metal – strong and aesthetic but a lot of tooth tissue needs to be removed for these preparations.
  • All ceramic, metal free crowns. These are more in favour now as they give good aesthetics with good strength whilst maintaining the maximum tooth tissue possible.

Ceramic, metal free crowns tend to be the crowns of choice and can be prepared and fitted with just two appointments.
