The Role of Digital Technology in Modern Dentistry

The landscape of dentistry is continually evolving, and one of the most significant advancements has been the integration of digital technology. From diagnosis to treatment, digital innovations have transformed traditional dental practices, enhancing the accuracy, efficiency, and outcomes of dental care. This blog explores how digital technology is reshaping modern dentistry and what it means for both dental professionals and patients.

Digital Imaging and Diagnostics

  1. Digital X-rays: Unlike traditional film x-rays, digital x-rays produce less radiation and offer immediate images. This advancement allows dentists to detect, diagnose, and treat dental issues more effectively and with greater precision. The images can be zoomed in on and adjusted for contrast, providing detailed views of the teeth and surrounding structures.
  1. Intraoral Scanner:  These small, pen-like devices enable dentists to view clear, detailed images of the mouth’s interior. This aids in a better understanding of dental conditions and enhances communication with patients, who can see the same images as the dentist.
  2. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT):  CBCT technology offers 3D imaging, giving dentists a comprehensive view of the teeth, bones, nerves, and soft tissues. This is invaluable for planning complex procedures like implants, extractions, and root canals.

CAD/CAM Technology

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) technologies have revolutionised dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, inlays, onlays, and bridges. The traditional method, which often required multiple visits, can now be done in a single appointment. Here’s how:

  • Design Stage:  After digital impressions are taken, the CAD software is used to design the dental restoration with high precision.
  • Manufacturing Stage: CAM technology then uses the design to mill the restoration from a block of ceramic or composite resin in the dental practice. The result is a perfectly fitted, durable, and aesthetically pleasing restoration completed in significantly less time.

Digital Impressions

Digital impression technology uses a hand-held scanner to accurately capture a digital ‘impression’ of the teeth and gums. This can be quicker, more comfortable and more precise than traditional impressions and can be used for a range of purposes, including creating restorations and orthodontic treatments, along with digital smile-design and advanced planning.

Digitally guided dental implant placement

The technology we use enables us to precisely plan dental implant treatment and produce a physical ‘guide’ through which the implant is placed into the mouth – not only is this quicker and less invasive, it ensures optimal outcomes predictably every time.
